Eligibility

Lynwood Yorkshire Miners Home Scarborough

Accommodation facilities are limited and admission is based on need relating to medical conditions and within the following guidelines:-

  • Eligibility for admission to the Convalescent Home in Scarborough is based on the number of years' service within the Yorkshire Coalfield.  Ex-employees are entitled to one admission, at a subsidised rate, for each completed 5 years of service.

  • You must provide verification of your employment within the mining industry at least 3 weeks prior to your booking.  Failure to do so will result in your booking being cancelled.  Verification can be, for example, a Mineworker's Pension Scheme pay slip or letter, training records, an old payslip or any other official documentation which links you directly to the mining industry.  If you have any trouble locating any of the above documents then you will need to apply to IRON MOUNTAIN to release your employment records.  Please call them direct on 01785 218030.  Once you have received your records from Iron Mountain, these must then be forwarded onto the Pontefract Office as soon as possible to complete the verification process.

  • Widows/widowers of ex employees may receive two convalescent admissions at the subsidised rate.

  • Transport to and from the Home is provided by CR Travel and beneficiaries are expected to use this service as part of their break.  Exceptions are ONLY made when a guest is unable to use the coach facilities for medical reasons and by prior arrangement with the Pontefract Office.

Please do not attend the home if you are suffering from any kind of virus and please note that no 'care' provision is provided.  guests must be able to look after themselves or manage with the assistance of their own partner/carer.

Entitlement-based admission can be granted once per year.  Beneficiaries who have received two or more previous admissions in the summer months are restricted to out-of-season dates.  We also operate a cancellation list, therefore please contact the office direct to request your name being added.  Bookings are processed in order of the dates requested i.e. February, March, April etc and you will be notified of a place approximately 3 months before the date you have requested.  It may therefore take a while for your application to be dealt with if you have requested a later date in the year.  We do not operate a 'first come first serve'  basis.

From 2023, the trustees agreed to allow a single person (not in a group) to take a companion with them even if they have no connection to the mining industry.  We encourage an out of season break for this so our beneficiaries do not miss out on their entitled summer breaks. This companion will pay the full cost of the break as outlined on the calendar/price list.
